Do you really know who you are? This book can help you answer this question!

As a certified personal development coach, one of the things that I consistently see in my clients is a total lack of spending any time with themselves.  Often, when given a list of different values and asked to prioritize them, you will see most people will put “Self” at the end.
In the short term, things are fine like this.  Stretched out over time, however, the inevitable end result is disillusionment, lack of energy, and frustration.

How do I know this?  If you pour everything into everyone and everything (work, kids sports, etc.) you will eventually reach the point where you find that you haven’t done anything for yourself in quite a long time.
People will try to justify this saying that they are giving everything to others, and wrap themselves in a shroud of nobility with the statement.

Three questions.

1. What happens when you have nothing else to give?  It is going to happen – you can’t run anything on drained batteries.  You need to recharge yourself to be able to give.  Doing something for yourself is not being selfish – it actually will allow you to be and do even better things for others.

2.  What happens when the people you are giving your all to either no longer need or want your help?  Think empty nest syndrome here.  It is no secret that almost all parents go through this with their teenagers.  You want to help, but they are trying to break away and be independent.  The giver is left alone with no sense of who they really are – their identity has been tied into another instead of their own.

3.  Who are you?  Short question, but how you answer this will play a huge part in your happiness and success.

This is where Antoinetta Vogels’ “Healthy Sense of Self” is going to be a game changer for some people.  This book is both scholarly and readable, which isn’t always the case.  In it, readers will find some of the thoughts that they have are really thoughts that they have allowed others to put there.  Then there are the standard demons of depression, insomnia, and addiction.  Self limiting beliefs are another gremlin that this book can help you conquer.

The end result?

“People with a healthy Sense of themselves know what they want in life; they also know their boundaries.  That enables them to come up with a plan for their living and their lives, and they are unlikely to feel the need to higher authorities to do that for them.  They certainly would not consider giving their lives to people who then use them for their won purposes, just as their self-absorbed, abusive parent used to do.  They are able to manage themselves and let their lives be an expression of their own opinion and preferences.  They do not need to be rewarded for good behavior by a person who is higher in rank for they intrinsically and sincerely know their own value.”

If that one paragraph speaks to you, look into a “Healthy Sense of Self” to help guide you to get to that end result.

Don't Worry - Be Happy AND Successful!

"Connecting Happiness and Success:  A Guide to Creating Success through Happiness" by Ray White is one of those books you wish you would have read when you were a freshman in high school.  Not that I would have understood the importance of the wisdom that was being shared, but even if I could have picked up a few of the golden nuggets shared by White it could have possibly changed many different paths I found myself taking to get me to where I am today.

"Connecting Happiness and Success" is broken down into seven concepts - any one of which probably deserve a book on their own:  Pleasure vs Happiness (my favorite!), Take Control of Your Life (next favorite!), Positive Relationships, Higher Purpose and Meaning, Defining Success, Clarify and Prioritize, and Implement with Discipline.

If none of those chapters would have any use to you in your present life - congratulations.  Buy the book and give it to someone less fortunate.  In all seriousness, buy two books and keep one for yourself because you aren't being completely honest with yourself.

I have read quite a few books this past year for this blog - and none have been covered in highlight even half as much as this one.  I lost count of the times that I thought "That's really good!  I  need to write that down!"  Some examples:

     -  "(Don't miss) positive moments in life because (you) are busy trying to build a life that will be full of positive moments."

     -  "Think about work and vacation.  How many people plan and think about their vacations while they are at work, then go on the vacations and think about work?'

     -  "Another part of the problem is not loving or appreciating ourselves.  We know all our flaws.  We see the same flaws in other people; and because we hate them in ourselves, we judge and hate them in others."

If I put all of the highlighted quotes - I would probably get in trouble for reprinting a quarter of the book.  It's just that good.

I appreciate that White kept the book very readable.  Books like this many times can get so technical to the point that they are useless, but this book does not have that affliction.

White also does a tremendous job supporting his book with a "Happiness App" that can be downloaded for free, a very nice website (http://connectinghappinessandsuccess.com/), and backs up his credentials by serving on the board of www.pursuit-of-happiness.org.  Seeing all of this makes me want to quit my job and work with all of these happy people instead!

In conclusion, I would like to thank Ray White for the effort and work that went into this book.  You created something that you can be proud of, that has changed the way that I look at some situations, and is truly a gift that you have given to anyone who invests the time to read it.

Gain insights from masters in their field in “Destiny Defining Decisions: 11 Best-Selling Entrepreneurs Reveal their Greatest Success Secrets”

“Destiny Defining Decisions:  11 Best-Selling Entrepreneurs Reveal their Greatest Success Secrets” by Aleks George Srbinoski is a wonderful collection of insights from 11 Entrepreneurs – each one that highlights a different skill or thought.  The book is made up of interviews that Srbinoski conducted as part of a radio show, as well as insights, activities to follow, and even virtual “gifts under your chair!”  (You’ll have to read to discover what they are!)  Each interview follows the same pattern, which I found to be a very nice way to section off the book as well as a very logical approach.

What I found interesting is that Srbinoski chose one question and asked all of the people he interviewed the same question.  This approach made it very easy to compare and contrast the responses, which I think was excellent because you didn’t have to wade through a huge narrative to get right to the “meat” of the book – the author sets it up, and then slams it home.

The question he asked was “what was the thought process behind the best life-changing decision you've have ever made?”

Srbinoski also finds a common theme that he discovered was found in all of his interviews – and that was that each person mentioned that they had to overcome fear to be successful.  The “fear” that they had to overcome presented itself in many different ways, but each one had their own method of conquering it.

Srbinoski is kind and thoughtful enough to include an extra interview at the end of the book.  This interview doesn’t ask the question that was asked in the other ones.  Srbinoski explains that this interview happened before his started gathering his material.  However, he felt that the interview was so powerful and touching that it just had to be included.  I think this was definitely the correct call, and I would like to personally like to thank the author for sharing the extra interview with the audience.

I know I didn’t get into specifics in this review about the material, but that is honestly because I don’t feel that I can relate in a short review what Srbinoski so poignantly presents.

While this book’s title would make you think that the audience is for Entrepreneurs only – there is wisdom and golden nuggets spread all throughout this book.  What I really appreciate is that the author doesn’t try to hide them by coming across as overly professorial and talking over the reader’s head.

I highly recommend this book for everyone!
